PUTRAJAYA, Sept 23 — Police are liaising with Taiwanese counterparts over a former intelligence officer who was sentenced to 18 years’ in prison for reportedly working with a Chinese double agent who had visited Malaysia.
However, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar cautioned against speculation that the exchange of information between Major Wang Tsung-wu and the Chinese intelligence were related to Malaysia.
“We are exchanging intelligence with our counterpart in Taipei,” he told reporters today during a press conference.
The AFP news outlet reported that Wang was sentenced yesterday by Taiwan’s High Court following convictions for espionage and security violations.
The court provided no further details, citing national security restrictions.
Local media reported that Wang was allegedly turned by China when he was sent there as an undercover agent for Taiwan’s Military Intelligence Bureau around 20 years ago.
He then spied for Beijing for more than a decade, reports said.
Was also recruited retired colonel Lin Han in 2013 to help collect intelligence, according to Hong Kong-based Apple Daily.
Lin had travelled to Singapore and Malaysia to meet with Chinese intelligence and passed on information about the identities of the Taiwan bureau’s officers and their missions, Taipei-based Liberty Times reported.
