KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 3 — A temporary employee of a hotel was fined RM1,200 by the Magistrate’s Court here today for obstructing a police officer from discharging his duties and failing to produce identity card.    

Mohamad Aminuddin Khan Mohd Yusof, 22, pleaded guilty after the charge was read out to him before Magistrate Ahmad Solihin Abdul Wahid.  

The accused was fined RM1,000 for the first charge and RM200 for the second offence, in default three months’ jail.  

On the first count, Mohamad Aminuddin was charged with obstructing a civil servant, namely a policeman in front of Pertama Residency, Taman Kobena Cheras at 2.50am on Monday.

The charge under Section 186 of the Penal Code provides for a jail term of not more than two years and a maximum fine of RM10,000, or both, if convicted. 

On the second count, the accused had failed to provide his identity card or any temporary identification document at the same time and place.   

The charge under Rule 7(1) of the National Registration Regulations is also punishable under Rule 25(1)(n) of the same Regulations which provides for a jail sentence up to three years or a maximum fine of RM20,000, upon conviction.

Earlier, deputy public prosecutor Noorelynna Hanim Abdul Halim asked the court to impose a deterrent sentence as a lesson to the accused.      

Meanwhile, counsel Mohamad Zaidi Othman who represented the accused asked for the court not to send his client to jail as the accused is the sole breadwinner of the family, had pleaded guilty and had been remanded since the day he was arrested. — Bernama
