GEORGE TOWN, June 16 — Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng will request a meeting with Works Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof to discuss the state’s proposed third bridge project.
The DAP lawmaker said his office will contact the minister’s office to make an appointment on the matter.
“I don’t want a polemic in the media so if he wants, we can meet to discuss the project rationally,” he said.
Lim was responding to Fadillah’s recent request for the state to submit all documents on the proposed project, including the RM305 million feasibility study and detailed design studies being conducted for the undersea tunnel and three paired roads.
Fadillah reportedly said the ministry is willing to evaluate the state’s proposal if it complies with the request for documentation.
Lim, however, said the state had submitted all documents on the proposal as well as an application for approval directly to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.
“So far, I have no issues with Fadillah, so we can meet to talk about the project. Let’s not politicise this issue,” he said.
He said if the federal government gave an approval in principle, the Penang government will build a toll-free bridge.
The approval for a third bridge would mean that the controversial undersea tunnel will be cancelled and replaced by the bridge, he said.
“Since building the bridge will cost less than the tunnel, we will be able to build a toll-free bridge,” he said.
