KUALA KANGSAR, June 14 ― With polling just five days away, Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) is confident of possibly unseating Barisan Nasional (BN) with a single digit majority.
Perak Amanah chairman Asmuni Awi said he came up with the figure from the survey the party campaigners had conducted during the campaign trail.
“We are closing near and it is not impossible that we may just win with a single digit majority,” he told reporters at the party command centre here yesterday.
Asmuni called on outstation voters to return and exercise their voting rights, as their votes are vital to show support for Amanah’s push to defeat BN.
“The outstation voters are reluctant to return home as they would be coming back to Kuala Kangsar to celebrate Hari Raya Aidilfitri two weeks later. Some say that there is no reason to come back because the result will not change the ruling government.
“But the point here is if we win, it will impede the hidden agenda of BN and its allies. It will deny them the chance to achieve a two-thirds majority in Parliament.
“With this, their efforts to amend the constitution and strengthen their own position will be hampered,” he added.
Asmuni said the party had been making personal calls to outstation voters in its effort to persuade them to return for the two by-elections.
He said the party had also set up a hotline for outstation voters to receive information on the voting process from the command centre.
Asmuni also said the party’s momentum had been boosted by the visit of former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, who attended a colloquium on the 1Malaysia Development Berhad controversy on Sunday.
He said following Dr Mahathir’s presence, some voters who were previously aligned to BN were rapidly supporting Pakatan Harapan.
