KOTA KINABALU, June 10 ― A civil servant was detained by police here for driving a car with the fake registration number “D3V1L”.
Kota Kinabalu city police chief assistant commissioner M. Chandra said the 33-year-old from Papar and driving a black Perodua Viva car was caught during a special operations in the city’s coastal road on Wednesday from 2pm to 10pm.
“He was arrested for displaying a fake licence plate which is an offence under Section 108 of the Road Transport Act 1987,” he said during a press conference here today.
The offence carries a maximum fine of RM5000 or one year jail or both upon conviction.
Investigations also revealed that the owner did not have a valid road tax certificate, but still drove the vehicle from his residence in Kinarut to his workplace in Likas, about a 40 minute drive away.
“Last week, we had a case of a `Selamat Hari Raya’ greeting on a car plate,” said Chandra who urged the public not to flaunt traffic rules with flamboyant license plates.
