KUCHING, June 8 — Sarawak Governor Tun Abdul Taib Mahmud reminded the Barisan Nasional (BN) state government today that it must fulfill its promises to develop the state and protect its rights after receiving a strong mandate in last month’s election.
He said the people have accepted the BN election manifesto which touched on socio-economic development, environment, protection of the state's rights and the rights of the people within Malaysia .
“The people, who voted for the Barisan Nasional in the elections want the pledges to be implemented because they depend on the government for development in their areas,” he said in his speech during the opening of the Sarawak legislative assembly here.
“I would also like to remind all the state legislators that they are holding the trust of the people who have voted for them in the elections and I do hope that the legislators will voice out their problems and wishes,” he added.
Taib, who stepped down as Sarawak's longest-serving chief minister on February 28, 2014, congratulated his successor Tan Sri Adenan Satem for winning 72 out of 82 state seats in the May 7 state election.
"This shows that the people supported his 53 administrative actions and policies which he has carried out since becoming the chief minister," he said.
Taib said he is confident that more policies, development programmes and projects will be carried out under Adenan’s leadership.
Ahead of the May 7 state election, Adenan had asked Sarawakians to give him another term in office to gain autonomous rule from Putrajaya as well as its right to be paid 25 per cent royalties for oil and gas mined from within its territories.
