JOHOR BARU, June 7 ― A labourer was sentenced by the Sessions Court here today to a total of 14 years' jail for posting insulting comments against the Tunku Mahkota of Johor, Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim, in a social website.

Judge Sabariah Atan sentenced Muhammad Amirul Azwan Mohd Shakri to a year's jail on each count, to be served concurrently from the date of arrest, which was last April 28. Muhammad Amirul Azwan 19, had pleaded guilty to all the charges.

He was charged with 14 counts of posting the insulting comments against theTunku Mahkota of Johor on his Facebook account, “Miyo Castello” with the intention of hurting the prince's feeling and also that of the Johor royal institution.

Muhammad Amirul Azwan, from Kampung Palas Merah, Tumpat, Kelantan, was charged under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, which provides a maximum fine of RM50,000 or an imprisonment for up to a year, or both, upon conviction.

The prosecution was conducted by deputy public prosecutor Nor Azizah Mohamad, while Muhammad Amirul Azwan was unrepresented. ― Bernama
