KUALA LUMPUR, May 1 — Ahmad Razif Abd Rahman will remain Terenggau mentri besar despite being stripped of his state titles, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak announced today.
Najib said he was granted an audience with the east coast state Sultan yesterday and there was no longer any question over Ahmad Razif’s position in the state government.
“As a result and conclusion from that meeting, I wish to inform that the Terengganu Mentri Besar Razif will remain as Terengganu mentri besar and will carry out his duties as usual.
“With this notification, I hope there will no longer be any questions and any assumptions about his position and we must consider the issue of Terengganu’s leadership has already been resolved,” Najib told reporters here.
Najib, who is also Barisan Nasional president and Umno chairman, said he had informed Ahmad Razif of the results of the royal meeting.
Najib declined to elaborate on the details that transpired during the meeting, saying it was between him and the Terengganu Sultan.
Asked if there will be requests made for the reinstatement of Ahmad Razif’s titles, Najib replied: “That is the Sultan’s right, I don’t want to interfere. In the Constitution, it is the Sultan’s powers.”
With the consensus reached between him and the Sultan for Ahmad Razif to remain as Terengganu mentri besar, Najib said the focus should now be on ensuring the state’s administration runs smoothly for the sake of the people’s development and wellbeing.
The palace rescinded Ahmad Razif’s state titles last month, prompting speculation as to whether he would be replaced as Terengganu mentri besar or snap polls would be held.
