KUALA LUMPUR, March 25 — After the last round of price hikes, here is finally something to turn that frown upside down for frequent travellers looking for a comfy, convenient and quick way to get to the country’s main airport.

A new app called airport2u offers users cheaper flat-rate one-way taxi rides to the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) and budget airline terminal KLIA2 in Sepang through rideshares.

Compared to an estimated cab fare of RM50 from Berjaya Times Square to KLIA, airport2u offers a flat-rate fare of RM34.90 per passenger.

An uberX estimate for the commute is around RM84, while a GrabCar is estimated to be around RM90.

The service currently picks up passengers from 27 pick-up points consisting of landmarks in the Klang Valley including the areas of Cheras, Puchong, Kelana Jaya, Old Klang Road, Shah Alam and Kepong, among others.

To make a booking, users must book for the service seven days in advance via the app, and select a pick up point where he or she will be picked up along with the other passengers that would be sharing the ride.

Upon making a booking, users will receive an email with details on how payment can be made.

“We are targeting single travellers, budget travellers,” co-creator and chief executive Apriman Darlis was quoted telling English language daily The Star.

In the same report, Apriman told the daily that airport2u currently has 35 taxi drivers attached to the service, which only utilises drivers of multi-purpose vehicles (MPV).

While the rate may be cheaper for individuals travelling alone, those travelling in groups would probably get a better deal from other services that are not based on number of passengers.

That being said, fares from other locations such as 1 Mont Kiara only costs RM39.90, Tropicana City Mall at RM32.90, The Curve at RM34.90 and Sunway Pyramid at RM29.90.

Though if you are really tight on budget, you can take a SkyBus, that offers trips to KLIA2 from KL Sentral and 1 Utama Shopping Centre for RM9.99 and RM14.50 respectively.

Airport2u also currently does not offer rides from the airport to the pick-up locations.

The app is currently only available for Android devices on the Google Play Store, but alternatively, you can also use the airport2u service via web browser by going to www.airport2u.com.
