KUALA LUMPUR, March 8 — Malaysia needs a “Democracy Guarantee Act” to ensure fair elections and a stronger democracy, PKR president Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail said today.
Dr Wan Azizah said the proposed new law should be drafted and tabled in Parliament six months from now.
“Secondly, I also propose that a Parliamentary select committee be formed to formulate a Democracy Guarantee Act that will outline all the steps necessary to reform and strengthen the democracy in all branches of the country and all related institutions, including to guarantee free and fair elections,” the Permatang Pauh MP said.
She did not elaborate further on the proposed new legislation, but said a National Consensus Council should be formed to among others, be involved in drafting the law and to help Malaysia achieve national consensus.
Dr Wan Azizah also suggested the formation of a Truth and Reconciliation Commission to allow the country to make peace with its past and move forward, further calling for the release of political detainees and alleged victims of power abuse conspiracies through royal pardon.
