KUALA LUMPUR, March 7 — Universiti Kuala Lumpur (UniKL) will collaborate with Rapid Rail Sdn Bhd (Rapid Rail) to set up a Rail Academy, the country’s first rail excellence centre, to produce more skilled labour in train maintenance and improvement.
Rural and Regional Development Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaacob said the pioneer group of 25 students will begin their first year this September.
“During the first six months, they will be placed at the Institute of Product Design And Manufacturing (UniKL IPROM), Cheras before proceeding to do their six-month practical training at the Rapid Rail Depot in Subang, Selangor.
“The intake of students will be increased from time to time to achieve the maximum capacity of 500 students a year,” he told a press conference after the signing ceremony for the memorandum of understanding between head of the Akademi Rel Rapid Rail Sdn Bhd, Zaki Mohamad and UniKL president, Prof Datuk Dr Mazliham Mohd Su’ud.
Also present were the Chairman of Kumpulan Prasarana Malaysia Bhd Tan Sri Ismail Adam and Head of Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA) Datuk Ibrahim Ahmad.
Rapid Rail is a subsidiary of Prasarana while UniKL is wholly-owned by MARA. — Bernama
