KUALA LUMPUR, March 7 — Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad signed the Citizens’ Declaration because the former prime minister had lost public support, Pakatan Harapan said today.
The federal opposition pact comprising PKR, DAP and Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) said the signing of the Citizens’ Declaration, which pushes for the prime minister’s removal, was an “indirect” admittance by Dr Mahathir that the Barisan Nasional (BN) government had failed Malaysians.
“Mahathir is not strong; he needs us,” DAP parliamentary leader Lim Kit Siang said in a joint press conference with PKR and Amanah leaders here today.
Meanwhile, federal opposition leader Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail said the question of forgiving Dr Mahathir for his past mistakes did not arise as the current focus was on removing Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak from office.
“It’s not about vengeance; it is not about wanting to revenge. It’s about the country,” she said.
“It (the citizens declaration) is an acceptance by him indirectly that the current BN system has destroyed the country,” she elaborated.
PAN’s information chief Khalid Samad separately said the opposition enjoyed better support than Dr Mahathir.
“How many MP’s does he have? We have a whole coalition,” he joked.
Dr Wan Azizah also said the opposition plans to hold a ‘Save Malaysia’ roadshow to highlight Putrajaya’s scandals and controversies, and invited Dr Mahathir and his allies to join.
