KUALA LUMPUR, March 6 — The citizens’ declaration signed last Friday condemning the leadership of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak could end up turning away youths and becoming an advantage for Barisan Nasional instead, Malay daily Utusan Malaysia’s Sunday edition Mingguan Malaysia said today.
In an editorial written under the pseudonym Awang Selamat, the paper said that youths would not like “desperate acts”, in reference to the declaration that saw opposition and former government leaders, including former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, come together on the same platform.
“They can’t even accept switching allegiances when it comes to an English Premier League club let alone extreme political stances,” it said.
“The declaration can turn into an advantage for BN instead,” it added.
The editorial also said that Dr Mahathir’s actions and methods are no longer “elegant”.
On Friday, Dr Mahathir led a group comprising prominent politicians from both sides of the fence and civil society leaders pushing for a change of government.
Dr Mahathir told a press conference at the Universiti Malaya Alumni clubhouse here that a vote of no-confidence against Najib in Parliament was among the methods the group would consider, though he added that this would require the support from the majority, including lawmakers from Umno that is the largest party in the House.
