Nazri says will push for Umno Supreme Council to sack Muhyiddin, Mukhriz

KUALA LUMPUR, March 6 — Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz said today he will personally push for Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir to be sacked from Umno when the party’s Supreme Council meets at the end of this month, as the duo’s persistent attacks against Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s leadership could no longer be ignored.

Nazri, who is an Umno Supreme Council member, pointed out that both Muhyiddin and Mukhriz had insulted Najib with their purported support for a “citizens’ declaration” led by former leader Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad that called for the prime minister’s ouster.

“I want to initiate the process for them (Muhyiddin and Mukhriz) to be thrown out of the party,” he told Malay Mail Online when contacted.

The Padang Rengas MP said he would also propose for the Umno Supreme Council to sit as a disciplinary board and decide what action should be taken against the former deputy president and the former Kedah mentri besar.

“There is no need for an emergency meeting. We are not in a hurry. Let us follow the due process.

“But I feel that the Supreme Council must sit as a disciplinary board as these two must be tried by their peers,” Nazri explained.

When asked whether he would also push for Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal to be sacked from the party, Nazri said there was no need for the time being as Shafie did not attend the “citizen’s declaration” press conference on Friday.

“The next Supreme Council meeting is at the end of the month.

“Once it is agreed on the action to be taken against Muhyiddin and Mukhriz, we have to send them a show-cause letter and give them two weeks to reply before we decide,” Nazri added.

Muhyiddin lost his Cabinet position last year in a reshuffle and was suspended as Umno No. 2 in a unanimous decision by its Supreme Council last week for his vocal criticisms against the leadership.

Mukhriz was removed as Kedah mentri besar and state Umno liaison chief last month, months after he publicly criticised the Umno leadership.

Both men have said they will stay on in Umno despite speculation they would follow the footsteps of former president Dr Mahathir who quit on Monday.

Both Muhyiddin and Mukhriz were among 58 prominent politicians on both sides of the divide and civil society leaders to join up in a common push for a new government.

Shafie had also reportedly signed the citizen’s declaration, although he was not present at the press conference.
