KUALA LUMPUR, March 5 — An Umno supreme council member suggested today the ruling party may call an emergency meeting soon to discuss the fate of its two leading dissenters, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal.

Datuk Seri Hasan Malek said the duo have “humiliated” the party with their purported support for a “citizens’ declaration” led by former leader Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad yesterday that called for the prime minister’s ouster, adding that action needed to be taken.

“We can’t tolerate all this nonsense and we certainly do not want to have an enemy within the party.

“We need to do something about this, because if you want be with us, you work with us and support us. It’s very bad otherwise,” he was quoted saying in a report by news portal The Star Online.

Hasan, the former federal minister of domestic trade, cooperatives and consumerism, said the party usually meets once a month, but added: “I believe this calls for an emergency meeting”.

He said Umno president and Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak might call for an emergency meeting soon to discuss the latest incident.

“We were humiliated by the actions of the suspended party deputy president and vice president.

“They forgot that these were the main enemies and now they are sitting together with them to sign this declaration,” Hasan told the news portal.

Muhyiddin lost his Cabinet position last year in a reshuffle and was suspended as Umno Number Two in a unanimous decision by its supreme council last week for his vocal criticisms against the leadership.

Semporna MP and Umno vice-president Shafie was similarly dropped in the 2015 Cabinet change.

Both men have said they will stay on in Umno despite speculation they would follow the footsteps of former president Dr Mahathir who quit on Monday.

Both Muhyiddin and Shafie were among 58 prominent politicians on both sides of the divide and civil society leaders to join up in a common push for a new government.
