KUCHING, March 3 — A total of 1,141,294 people are eligible to vote in the Sarawak polls, an official from the Election Commission (EC) said today.
Ahmad Adli who is the EC’s Perak director told a news conference here the number was based on the latest electoral roll gazetted last December.
“The total voters include 14,000 from the armed forces and 9,500 from the police,” he said.
The security forces typically cast their votes through the post, ahead of regular voters on polling day. But the EC has yet to announce the election dates.
“Once the state legislative assembly is dissolved, we call for a meeting to decide on the date of polling and nomination and other processes of holding the election,” EC chairman Datuk Seri Hashim Abdullah said.
He added that the commission has a budget of RM135 million for this year’s polls, compared to the RM75 million allocated in 2011.
