KUALA LUMPUR, March 3 — A moderate earthquake measuring 5.7 on the Richter scale struck Southwest of Sumatra this morning, according to the Malaysian Meteorological Department.
In a statement today, the department said the quake with its epicentre at 629 km southwest of Siberut, Indonesia, 1,140 km southwest of Port Dickson, Negri Sembilan occurred at 8.10am.
It is now monitoring developments in the aftermath of the earthquake and will post updates on the situation from time to time. However, there is no tsunami threat, the statement added.
A 7.8 magnitude quake occurred off Mentawai Islands in West Sumatra, Indonesia at 7.58pm (8.58pm in Malaysia) last night; tremors were felt up to Padang in West Sumatra province, Medan and Aceh as well as several states in Malaysia. — Bernama
