KUALA LUMPUR, March 2 — Broadband subscribers on TM’s networks should expect the currently reduced access speeds to remain at least until the end of March.
The telecoms giant said the damage to the Asia Submarine Cable Express (ASE) system off Singapore has affected two of its six fibre pairs, and that repair work is only scheduled to start on March 25 with completion scheduled for March 31.
“However, we wish to highlight that the restoration works will be subject to weather and sea conditions, identification of the actual location of the fault and the challenges ahead, working at great sea depths and pressure,” the firm said in a statement.
“During this period, Internet users may experience some degree of service degradation such as slow browsing and high latency while accessing international websites mainly hosted in the United States (US), North Asia and Europe.”
Subscribers began reporting reduced Internet access speed this week, with TM earlier confirming that one of its undersea cables had been damaged.
TM offers broadband services under the Unifi and Streamyx brands, but it is also the provider of network infrastructure for other local Internet service providers.
