KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 26 — A man who stole a laptop belonging to a former federal territories minister last month was sentenced by a magistrate’s court here today, to six days’ jail.
Unemployed Mohd Effendy Jainuddin, 25, who pleaded guilty to the charge was also fined RM3,000 in default two weeks’ jail. He paid the fine.
He admitted stealing the Asus laptop worth RM4,500 at the victim, Tan Sri Dr Zulhasnan Rafique’s house in Damansara Heights here about 2am on Jan 8.
Magistrate Muhamad Faizal Ismail ordered the jail sentence to begin from Feb 23, the date of Mohd Effendy’s arrest.
The charge under Section 381 of the Penal Code carries a maximum prison sentence of seven years or a fine.
According to the facts of the case, the complainant, Datuk Ahmad Jais Raduan as legal adviser to Zulhasnan was asked to lodge a police report after several valuable items worth RM300,000, including a branded hand bag went missing.
A police team later arrested Mohd Effendy, a former aide to Ahmad Jais at Medan Niaga Setapak here.
Upon questioning, he confessed to stealing and selling the laptop for RM300 to a man.
Earlier, Mohd Effendy who was represented by counsel Mohamad Zaidi Othman pleaded for a lenient sentence on the grounds he was desperate, and claimed his former employer had not paid him salary for three months. — Bernama
