SEREMBAN, Feb 1 — A total of RM27.8 million has been spent on rehabilitative work in 60 accident-prone locations on main roads and highways last year.
Works Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof said it was part of the government’s efforts to boost the level of safety and reduce the risks of accidents.
“The government and I personally are very concerned and sad at mishap cases especially those involving deaths and causing grief to the victims’ families,” he said at a ceremony on the completion of lighting along the Kajang-Seremban Expressway (Lekas) and Road Safety Campaign in conjunction with Chinese New Year here, tonight.
His text of speech was read by his deputy Datuk Rosnah Abdul Rashid Shirlin. Also present was Negri Sembilan Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan.
Fadillah said it was not worthwhile to have first-class highways and roads but because of the attitude of some road users who did not adhere to the regulations, accidents occurred leading to loss of life.
He said the ministry had also issued a stop work order at major highways for 14 days from today.
He said it was a measure to ease congestions on the highways due to construction and maintenance works.
“However, critical work is exempted (from the stop work order),” he said.
He also said that the ban on heavy vehicles on major roads and highways would be enforced by the Road Transport Department for four days, namely on February 6 and 7 as well as February 13 and 14. — Bernama
