KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 26 — Attorney-General Tan Sri Mohamed Apandi Ali has been appointed as a director in Lembaga Tabung Haji (LTH).
When contacted, LTH’s communications and public affairs division general manager Anis Zuhani Ahmad confirmed the matter but did not state of the exact date of the appointment.
“Yes, he (Apandi) was appointed recently and that is all I can say,” she said when asked to elaborate further.
She also declined to comment when asked if Apandi’s appointment was made following reports claiming the fund’s reserves are in the negative.
Copies of two letters purportedly issued by Bank Negara Malaysia stating that the board’s reserves were in negative surfaced on the Internet yesterday.
The letter to Tabung Haji, among others, said that Section 22 of the board’s act did not warrant it to announce dividends and bonuses if its assets are lesser than its obligations.
Another letter to Minister in the Prime Minister’s department Datuk Seri Jamil Khir Baharom was to inform the minister in charge of Muslim affairs of the financial implications the matter would have on the government because deposits from the board were wholly guaranteed by Putrajaya.
