GEORGE TOWN, Nov 20 — The Penang Island City Municipal Council (MBPP) is currently using drones to monitor any illegal land clearing activity under its jurisdiction, Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said.

The Air Putih assemblyman added that the council also plans to install CCTVs to monitor hilly areas in 2016.

“A total 22 locations have been identified for the CCTV sites,” he said today in his winding up speech at the state legislative assembly.

“For Bukit Laksamana, we will monitor the hill with drones in December,” he added.

He was replying to questions raised on the illegal hill clearing works in Bukit Gambir and Bukit Laksamana and suggestions that the state monitor the hills with drones.

Lim stressed that MBPP is very serious about the issue of illegal hill clearing works in the state.

There was an uproar over illegal hill clearing works earlier this year, particularly at Bukit Laksamana in Teluk Bahang.

Last year, illegal clearing works in Bukit Gambir made headlines and the landowner was subsequently taken to court and fined.
