PUTRAJAYA, Nov 17 ― The leaders of all countries are susceptible to threats from the Islamic State (IS), the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) said today after a minister said that Malaysian leaders were targeted by the terrorist group.
Speaking to reporters at an event here, Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar gave his assurance that security will be increased at this week's Asean Summit.
“All leaders are threatened by the IS, so we will always be on alert and that is why we have heightened the security at the Asean Summit to face all kind of threats including IS,” Khalid said.
“In my opinion, no leaders can run away from the IS threat.”
News portal The Star Online quoted Defence Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein recently as saying that he had received a report over how the terrorist group had targeted Malaysian leaders, including himself.
Hishammuddin yesterday explained that the disclosure was necessary in the aftermath of last Friday’s terror attacks on Paris, France.
At a press conference yesterday, the minister said he “deliberately” chose to reveal that Malaysian leaders were being targeted by IS as he wanted to create a sense of urgency back home to ensure that such attacks did not happen here.
Three days ago, it was reported that over 100 people were killed and more than 200 injured during attacks by terrorists on restaurants, a concert hall and a sports stadium in Paris.
