GEORGE TOWN, Nov 5 — A state executive councillor suggested that separate lock-ups be provided for transgender detainees to ensure their safety.

Youth and Sports, Women, Family and Community Development Committee chairman Chong Eng said the police should be legally ordered to do so.

“Men who act and wear women’s clothing should be separated as what is being practised, except that there is no law,” she told a press conference today.

Chong Eng said a letter on the matter was sent to Penang Police chief Datuk Abdul Rahim Hanafi in August.

In reply, Abdul Rahim said although there was no such law, the police were  sensitive about it and place transgender detainees in separate lock-ups.

Separation of transgender detainees should also be practised by hospitals. — Bernama
