GEORGE TOWN, Oct 19 — Internet users here will soon be able to surf at higher speeds using the Penang Free WiFi at 50 locations around George Town.

The state's Penang Free WiFi service will be upgraded to 3Mbps speeds at selected spots all around Komtar and the Unesco heritage zone.

According to a press release from Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng's office, the new High Speed Penang Free WiFi will be officially launched this Wednesday.

The Penang Free WiFi service was first launched six years ago and previously had a bandwidth of 75Mbps before it was increased to 375Mbps in February this year.

The increased bandwidth enabled users to enjoy connections of up to 1Mbps compared to 512kbps previously, and now, users will be able to experience even faster speed at the 50 hotspots in town.

The free WiFii service is now available at 1,560 hotspots located in various spots on both the island and the mainland.

It is accessible at most public places at all times and users need only register once to begin using the service.

There are now about 600,000 registered users for the Penang Free WiFi service and an average of 20,000 users log into the service daily.
