KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 11 — The 62nd MCA annual general meeting today passed a slew of resolutions, including calling on Asean, especially Indonesia to take more vigorous and convincing action to address the haze problem.
It expressed deep concern over the ongoing haze situation shrouding the nation, without any hint of effective solutions.
It stressed the haze problem had disrupted people’s daily life, paralysed certain economic activities and harmed the people’s health.
In politics, the 1,761 delegates endorsed a resolution calling to embrace the concept of moderation and harmony, and urged political, non-governmental bodies and other entities, as well as their leaders to cease all forms of provocative acts leaning on race, religion or culture.
Highlighting the need to avoid confrontational behaviour, the assembly said offending parties must be dealt with severely by the relevant laws.
MCA also favoured the strengthening of the management of online media and social media platforms to eliminate rumour propagation, inciting hatred and sedition to protect social harmony and national stability.
Another resolution called on the authorities to continually enhance strategies and measures to prevent, investigate and arrest plots and actions of terrorism, and to effectively contain and eliminate the spread of terrorist followings in Malaysia.
On education, the general assembly said it rejected any demand to shut down vernacular schools, stressing the need to protect the right to mother tongue education and a multi-stream education system.
The party also urged the government to improve the country’s disaster management system, encompassing areas such as early flood-warning system as well as pre-current-post disaster management, and disaster relief and reconstruction mechanisms.
The delegates voiced their objection to any attempt to implement the hudud law, noting that the Federal Constitution should be respected.
They also supported the leadership’s proposal to expand the number of qualified members to vote in party elections for central posts. — Bernama
