KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 4 — Several areas in the north, especially Penang, recorded increased unhealthy Air Pollutants Index (API) readings tonight, with Seberang Jaya 2 having the highest API 191 as compared to 186 at 6pm today.

According to the Department of Environment’s portal, as of 10 pm, Universiti Sains Malaysia also recorded unhealthy API at 189 followed by Alor Setar (168), Perai (164), Seri Manjung (145), Langkawi (118) and Kangar (112).

Meanwhile, several areas also showed a drop in the API readings, although they were still at the unhealthy level among them SK Jalan Pegoh, Ipoh at 173, Kampung Air Putih , Taiping (169), Shah Alam (162), Port Klang and Bakar Arang in Kedah (both at 158), Batu Muda, Kuala Lumpur (153) while Putrajaya, Petaling Jaya and Banting (all three at 150).

Jalan Tasek in Ipoh also recorded unhealthy API reading at 142 followed by Cheras and Kuala Selangor (both at 135), Nilai (133), Seremban (131), Malacca City (125), Port Dickson (124), Jerantut (120), Bukit Rambai (118), Kuala Terengganu and Kemaman (114 and 102) and Muar (101). 

An API of between 0 to 50 is good, 51 to 100 (moderate), 101 to 200 (unhealthy), 201 to 300 (very unhealthy) and 300 and above (hazardous).
