PUTRAJAYA, Oct 1 — The Court of Appeal here today upheld the conviction and RM20,000 fine on a quantity surveyor for posting derogatory comments on Facebook about Johor Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar.
A three-member panel chaired by Justice Datuk Wira Mohtarudin Baki unanimously dismissed Ahmad Abdul Jalil’s appeal after ruling that it did not have merit.
The judge said there was no reason to disturb the Sessions Court judge’s findings which were upheld by the High Court as the offence committed by Ahmad was serious.
Other judges in the panel were Datuk Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat and Datuk Ahmadi Asnawi.
Ahmad was initially accused of two charges but eventually acquitted of the second.
He was found guilty of the first charge by the Sessions Court in Johor Baru on Oct 29, 2013, of posting offensive comments through Facebook using the profile name ‘Zul Yahya’, to intentionally offend the Sultanate of Johor.
He committed the offence at his office in Jalan Wangsa Delima 11, Section 5, Wangsa Maju, Kuala Lumpur, at around 6 pm on Oct 10, 2012.
Ahmad paid the RM20,000 fine imposed by the Sessions Court but his appeal was dismissed on Oct 27, last year, by the High Court in Johor Bahru.
He was represented by counsel Mohd Radzlan Jalaludin and Iylia Iqbal Ibrahim while deputy public prosecutor Masri Mohd Daud appeared for the prosecution. — Bernama
