GEORGE TOWN, Sept 22 ― Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak must direct 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) to respond to question over its RM42 billion in debts, said DAP's Lim Guan Eng.
The Penang lawmaker said it is time 1MDB stop hiding and tell the truth about its debts.
“Even the Bank Negara Malaysia Governor Tan Seri Zeti Akhtar Aziz has said there are possible contraventions in approvals granted to 1MDB,” he pointed out.
Yesterday, Zeti said BNM has already handed over their investigation papers on possible contraventions to approvals granted to 1MDB to the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC), and that the central bank is in ongoing discussions with the AGC on the issue.
Lim said since BNM has revealed the possible contraventions to approvals granted to 1MDB, the firm can no longer hide and remain silent.
“This is very serious as it is from BNM, so it is time they open up,” he said.
Zeti also said the public has the right to get answers to the controversy surrounding 1MDB and the RM2.6 billion donation made to Najib's private bank accounts for the sake of greater transparency in governance.
Lim added that clear answers from 1MDB are vital given the controversy’s effects on the ringgit and investor confidence.
1MDB is Najib’s brainchild, after he converted the Terengganu Investment Authority into the state-owned investor in 2009.
Yesterday, Zeti told a panel discussion at the Economic Update 2015 that the public wants answers and that they deserve the answers to the controversy.
She said there must be clarity on which authorities are probing both issues, especially with the police, Malaysian Anti Corruption Commission and the central bank all having launched separate investigations.
