KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 21 — The #Merah169 protesters are free to hold another rally in Selangor next month provided they do not create chaos and state their objectives clearly, Mentri Besar Azmin Ali said today.
According to a report by The Malaysian Insider, Azmin’s statement was a response to #Merah169 leader Datuk Jamal Md Yunos saying he will organise a second “Red Shirts” rally next month to demand an explanation over allegations surrounding Selangor’s investment firm Darul Ehsan Investment Group.
“They have the right to rally but there must be a clear purpose. There must be a reason, not just create chaos, disturbance,” Azmin reportedly said today.
Thousands of red shirted people were bussed into the federal capital on Wednesday, which was also Malaysia Day, for the rally officially called “Himpunan Rakyat Bersatu” or the United People’s Assembly, but which caused concern among traders in the city centre and ethnic Chinese business leaders.
The protest was also marred by sporadic outbreaks of racism, with one attendee recorded calling a reporter “Crazy Chinese pig”, among other insults.
A pocket of rally participants led by Jamal also clashed with riot police in Petaling Street, forcing the authorities to fire water cannons to disperse the crowd.
