KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 28 — The provocative posters promising a “blood bath” for the Chinese who attend the Bersih 4 rally tomorrow is an act of intimidation towards the ethnic minority, DAP lawmaker Anthony Loke said today.
The Seremban MP claimed it was a typical modus operandi by agent provocateurs before rallies like those organised by polls reform group Bersih 2.0 to dissuade people, especially the Chinese, from taking part.
“This is clearly an intimidation if the Chinese join Bersih they will receive resistance from the Malays,” Loke told a press conference at the DAP headquarters here.
“Whoever produces these flyers, they are trying to scare the Chinese community from joining Bersih. We strongly condemn this act,” he added.
Penang police said earlier today that they have launched a sedition investigation after several posters turned up in George Town, Penang, featuring a man holding a parang and the words “Cina Turun Bersih, Sedia bermandi darah” (Chinese who go to Bersih, be prepared for a blood bath).
“We urge the police to do their duty professionally. Tomorrow and day after, they should ensure the harmony and peace for all those who attend Bersih,” Loke said.
He also revealed that three DAP Youth members were called in to the Kuala Langat IPD today to give their statement over distributing Bersih flyers in the district, but was unsure if they would be remanded.
Harapan Baru (HB) chief Mohamad Sabu urged Malaysians not to worry about their safety during the rally tomorrow as his movement will be mobilising over 1,000 volunteers under the Amal Relief (Arif) to help with security details tomorrow.
“We have taken necessary measures, do not worry. We will control the situation regardless race,” he said during the press conference with Loke.
DAP also said they will be mobilising 2,000 members as part of their security team during the rally on August 29 and 30.
The overnight Bersih 4 rally is scheduled this weekend at the Kuala Lumpur city centre, Kota Kinabalu in Sabah, Kuching in Sarawak, and other cities around the world.
It aims to press for institutional reforms and for Najib’s resignation over his handling of the 1Malaysia Development Berhad controversy.
