KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 16 — Umno secretary-general Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor today said he and the party's treasurere were aware of the RM2.6 billion “donation” made to party President Datuk Seri Najib Razak's personal bank account.
Tengku Adnan was quoted by The Star as saying that the issue had been “repeatedly explained” when addressing party members at the Umno Setiawangsa division meeting.
“We have repeatedly explain this issue. As the secretary-general, I am aware of it and so is the party treasurer,” he reportedly said.
Tengku Adnan also hit out at Najib’s critics in the opposition and NGOs, telling them to come clean on their sources of funds to organise rallies including the planned Bersih 4.0 rally this Aug 29 to 30.
The federal territories minister claimed that protesters in previous rallies were given cash in foreign currencies, alleging that some participants of the 1998 Reformasi protests “were holding USD50 (RM203) bill after they joined the rally”.
Coming back to the Bersih rallies, Tengku Adnan queried who was footing the bill for the proliferation of yellow t-shirts and banners at the pro-electoral reform demonstrations.
“We want to know where they get their funding. They give out yellow t-shirts and banners during each demonstrations.
“The public deserves to know where they get their source (funds) from? Please declare,” he said.
Earlier this month, the Malaysian Anti Corruption Commission (MACC) announced in a statement that the RM2.6 billion deposited into Najib's private accounts were donations from unidentified contributors and not from state-owned 1 Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB).
The statement came over a month after the Wall Street Journal ran a news report alleging that the money was channeled into Najib's private account through government agencies.
It was later alleged that the funds may have been used for BN’s general election campaign in 2013.
