PETALING JAYA, Aug 13 — The DAP managed to rake in over RM120,000 from donations contributed during a fundraising dinner centered around state-owned firm 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) last night.

The “The 1MDB Titanic: DAP Petaling Jaya Fundraising” dinner organised by Petaling Jaya Utara MP Tony Pua and Damansara Utama assemblyman Yeo Bee Yin drew a crowd of over 3,000 people to a makeshift tent outside the Petaling Jaya Civic Centre.

Pua, who was dressed in a prisoner outfit, announced during his speech that the dinner had raised RM112,730 for the party in “donations”, including some RM8,000 for the Impian Sabah and Sarawak projects.

He also jokingly said that he was prepared to be arrested by the authorities over his comments on 1MDB, noting some of his past statements have landed him in trouble with the authorities.

“Today I am dressed up to be arrested. When they come for me, at least I don’t have to change,” Pua said drawing laughter from the audience.

Apart from Pua, other notable politicians at the dinner included DAP’s Lim Kit Siang, PKR’s Rafizi Ramli and Harapan Baru (HB) chief Mohamad Sabu, all of whom were invited up for speeches as well.

Lim during his speech asked the audience if they thought Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak and his wife who were invited for the dinner would attend it.

The crowd shouted a “No” in reply.

The Gelang Patah MP also asked the crowd if they thought Najib would face any punishment for having RM2.6 billion deposited into his account from anonymous donors.

“The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) says the money is not from 1MDB. How does MACC know?

“If any money went into his personal account even from donations, it is corruption and gratification. Najib must go to jail!” Lim said drawing thundering applause from those present.

PKR secretary-general Rafizi then teased the DAP, saying that for first time, DAP and Umno share an agreement as they are both seeking “donations”.

But unlike Umno, however, “I don’t think DAP is looking for RM2.6 billion”, he quipped.

During his speech, Mohamad championed HB’s causes, saying the soon-to-be-formed party will be an ideal replacement for PAS in a new opposition bloc.

“PAS has now divorced with DAP and DAP has divorced PAS. Pakatan Rakyat is no more, so can we defeat Barisan Nasional? We can’t.

“That’s why the emptiness left by PAS, a new and stronger party has filled the void. When HB, PKR, DAP and NGOs all gather, BN will lose. We are inclusive of all NGO and races, this is the rising of the people in the next elections,” he said during his rousing speech.

The dinner that went on for around three hours also featured several stalls that were set up near the main tent.

Some of the stalls sold Bersih 2.0 t-shirts and merchandise in conjunction with the mass rally this August 29 and 30 at Dataran Merdeka

There were also booths for voter registration and even a autograph session by controversial political cartoonist Zulkiflee SM Anwar Ulhaque or “Zunar” at one of the makeshift stalls.
