KUALA LUMPUR, July 29 ― The police today denied claims that a rally will be held at the iconic Dataran Merdeka in support of Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, who was yesterday removed as deputy prime minister.
Dang Wangi district police chief ACP Zainol Samah said there is no truth in the rumours, which had made its rounds on social media.
“No, no. There is no rally,” he told Malay Mail Online when contacted.
The message that surfaced earlier today called on “pejuang-pejuang Melayu” or Malay patriots to stage a large scale protest this afternoon over Muhyiddin’s removal from the federal Cabinet by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.
“Topple DS Najib and his lackeys!” read the message, which was written in Malay.
A variation of the message included a note to rally people originating from the state of Johor, accusing Najib of insulting Johor Umno and the people of Johor by flexing his executive muscle.
“Rise… and show your support for Tan Sri Muhyiddin and show our rejection of Datuk Seri Najib,” the note read.
Muhyiddin was axed as deputy prime minister yesterday and was succeeded by Home minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, in a Cabinet reshuffle announced by Najib.
