JOHOR BARU, July 28 — In a scene reminiscent of a gangster movie, the pillion rider of a slow-moving motorcycle fired three shots in succession at a businessman outside a restaurant in Jalan Trus early today.
All three shots found their mark in the 44-year-old victim’s chest in the incident about 12.03am.
The gunman and his accomplice, wearing full-faced helmets and black jackets escaped from the scene as the victim collapsed on the road.
Johor Baru Selatan police chief ACP Sulaiman Salleh said the businessman, whose identity was withheld by the police to facilitate investigations, was warded at the Sultanah Aminah Hospital.
He said the man’s condition was described as critical but stable. It is believed he will undergo an operation to remove the slugs.
He said the attempted murder occurred when the victim was walking towards his car after checking his compact disc shop in the vicinity.
“The incident happened very fast. The gunman shot the victim while the motorcycle was moving.
“We believe a semi-automatic gun was used to attack the businessman in the incident,” he said.
This is the third incident in which gunmen had targeted their victims in the state.
On July 15, a lorry driver was gunned down in Skudai while four days later, a contractor was shot dead in the compound of his house in Kampung Jaya Sepakat, Senai here. — Bernama
