IPOH, July 15 — A leisurely swim after school turned horribly wrong for nine teenagers when two of them drowned at the Batu Berangkai waterfalls in Kampar yesterday.
The victims are SMJK Pei Yuan students Phang Jiang Sen and Cheong Teck Sam, both 16.
In a statement, the Kampar Fire and Rescue Department said they were alerted to the incident at 3.40pm.
The rescue team arrived to find people at the scene had pulled the victims’ bodies out of the water.
Phang was from Kampar, and his schoolmate was from Tapah.
“The victims had gone for a swim with seven of their schoolmates in the waterfalls after school,” said Kampar police chief Supt Ng Kong Soon.
“They are believed to have drowned while swimming in a deep area of the waterfalls.”
The bodies were sent to the Kampar Hospital for post-mortem.
