KUCHING, July 2 — A fire that broke out Tuesday at a dumpsite in Bau is threatening to spread out of control to the nearby forest and surrounding areas, according to the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department.

Its director, Nor Hisham Mohammad, said the fire at the 0.6-hectare dumpsite in Jalan Skiat Lama, the third incident in the past one month, was the work of a mischief maker.

Bau Fire and Rescue Department chief Ebby Hirwandy Sarbini said someone claimed to have seen an individual leaving the site at about 10 pm on Tuesday, shortly before the fire started.

He said the fire had spread quickly and firemen were summoned to fight it.

Meanwhile, the villagers of Kampung Skiat Lama are crying foul over the smelly dumpsite which is said to have reached its maximum capacity. Leachate from the dumpsite had overflowed onto the nearby road.

The villagers claimed that they had raised the matter with the Bau District Council several times but nothing had been done about it.— Bernama
