KUALA LUMPUR, June 17 ― Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak today announced that civil servants’ permanent housing allowance will rise to RM300 at the minimum while special assistance will also be paid out to ease the group’s financial burden.
In a speech at annual event for civil services here, Najib said the government was always mindful of the welfare of public workers.
“As a concerned government that constantly look after the civil servants, I would like to announce that the latest minimum rate for the permanent housing allowance would be at RM300 per month,” he said.
“And for those who live in the quarters and never received such incentive before, they will get 25 per cent that is entitled to them… this will be effective on November 1, 2015.”
Najib further said that to lighten the financial burden of civil servants with Grade 54 positions and below, a special financial assistance payment of RM500 will be made while pensioner will get RM250.
Both payments will be made on June 25 this year, the prime minister added.
Previously, Bernama reported the Congress of Unions of Employees in the Public and Civil Services (Cuepacs) as demanding a review of the housing allowance after almost 20 years, and proposed an increase of the current minimum rate from RM180 to RM450.
