KUALA LUMPUR, June 4 — The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) is investigating a timber company operator concerning a case involving a RM1 million bribe.

MACC director of the Strategic Communications Division, Rohaizad Yaakob said in a statement today the logging company operator was alleged to have offered a bribe to a senior officer of the MACC and another senior officer of the Peninsular Malaysia Forestry Department so that they would not proceed with investigation on the logging activities carried out beyond his concession area in the Temenggor Forest Reserve, Gerik, Perak.

“The operator is being remanded for further investigation under Section 17 (b) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2009. He had offered a bribe of RM1 million and had paid bribes in the form of cash amounting to RM500,000 to the MACC officer and the Peninsular Malaysia Forestry Department officer.

“Both officers had refused the bribe and had reported the matter to the MACC,” he said. — Bernama
