KUALA LUMPUR, June 2 — Former PAS Youth chief Nasrudin Hassan Tantawi has decided to withdraw his bid for the PAS vice-presidency at the eleventh hour, even as his party goes to the polls this weekend.

Malay daily Sinar Harian reported today Nasrudin saying he wanted to make way for younger candidates to try and take the vice-presidency positions.

“I humbly withdraw from the vice-president candidacy because it is only reasonable that better figures be given the opportunity to undertake the responsibility of this position,

“Apart from the old faces as the incumbent, there are also new figures that are willing to accept the nomination for this important position,” the Malay daily quoted him as saying.

Nasrudin also said that the some of the leaders who be suited for the posts include Syura Council member Idris Ahmad, Kelantan Deputy Mentri Besar Datuk Mohd Amar Nik Abdullah and Selangor PAS commissioner Iskandar Abdul Samad.

He added, however, that he will continuously contribute to the party in his current capacity as PAS central committee member.

PAS delegates will convene in Kuala Selangor for this year’s annual congress, or muktamar, this weekend.

The PAS presidential contest will be a straight fight between Ahmad and Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang, after vice-president Datuk Husam Musa decided this week to only fight to keep his current post.
