GEORGE TOWN, May 21 — Penang police will record a statement from Selangor Mentri Besar and Parti Keadilan Rakyat deputy president Azmin Ali over his alleged degrading remarks against Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar at a ceramah before the Permatang Pauh by-election.
Penang police chief Datuk Abdul Rahim Hanafi said it would be done soon, but did not state when.
“We are waiting for Azmin Ali to record his statement,” he said after the monthly assembly at the police headquarters in Jalan Penang here yesterday.
Azmin was alleged to have uttered the remarks against Khalid, labelling him a lacky to Umno.
Abdul Rahim said statements had been recorded from 15 people so far.
“We are going to take more statements from several other people to complete the probe,” he said.
On Ops Warta, Rahim said police had arrested 58 people who failed to settle their traffic summonses.
“We have allowed bail for some of them and are bringing the remaining offenders to court,” he said.
He said there were no celebrities or VIPs among the traffic offenders, adding the hunt for wrongdoers would continue.
On the crime rate in the state, Rahim said the crime index had reduced by 29.1 per cent due to intensive police patrols in crime-prone areas and housing estates.
“Police have stepped up patrols in tourist spots, especially in Batu Ferringhi,” he said.
