SEREMBAN, May 7 — The Negri Sembilan Department of Wildlife and National Parks seized 59 local parrots categorised as protected and fully protected species, during a raid at a house in Port Dickson this morning.
A team of enforcement officers found 58 birds of the hanging parrot species and one of the bayan puling species at the house in Kampung Baru SiRusa about 10.30am.
The birds were worth about RM18,000.
Department director, Wan Mat Wan Harun said a 47-year-old housewife was detained to facilitate investigations.
She was released on police bail.
“Initial investigations revealed the birds were trapped in the vicinity of Port Dickson and Tampin for sale to pet shops and individuals,” he told a media conference here today.
Wan Mat said the raid was conducted, following a public tip-off and surveillance by the department, adding that 20 bird traps and 19 wire cages were also seized.
“We also found a licence to keep birds, belonging to another person,” he added. — Bernama
