KUALA LUMPUR, May 5 — The public sector should take measures to increase the number of persons with disabilities (PWDs) on its payroll, said Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Rohani Abdul Karim.

She said statistics showed that to date, only 3,741 PWDs had jobs in the public sector out of the country’s over one million civil servants.

“We hope that all ministries and government agencies will take stock of how many persons with disabilities they’ve employed.

“We need to work together on this as we should give such persons more job opportunities, given that many of them are highly educated. We can’t sideline them,” she told reporters after launching the Asia Pacific Supported Employment and Job Coach Seminar 2015, here, today.

Rohani said the private sector too should employ more PWDs.

She noted that 335,217 PWDs were registered with the ministry up to April this year.

Drawing more than 200 participants from 17 countries, the two-day seminar focuses on PWDs and employment. — Bernama
