KUALA LUMPUR, April 15 — The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has said it is not afraid to investigate anyone, pointing out that Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor was examined over allegations she purchased a RM24 million diamond ring.
Local Chinese-language daily Sin Chew Daily reported MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Abu Kassim Mohamed as saying that he had called Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak over the alleged jewellery purchase by the latter’s wife and that subsequently, the anti-graft body discovered from the Customs Department that the ring had been sent back to New York.
“If we dared to investigate Rosmah, do you think there’s anyone that we wouldn’t dare to investigate?” Abu Kassim was quoted saying.
“There was a thorough investigation into the alleged purchase of the ring,” he added.
In her biography launched in 2013, Rosmah denied claims that she had purchased the RM24 million diamond ring from jeweller Jacob & Co.
The prime minister’s wife said the ring was brought in to Kuala Lumpur on April 16, 2011, for a private viewing by her son-in-law’s mother during preparations for her daughter, Nooryana Najwa’s engagement to Daniyar Kessikbayev in 2011.
The ring was later returned to Jacob & Co’s headquarters in New York on May 13, 2012, she said.
Nooryana and Daniyar were married last month.
