MEDAN, April 2 — From next year onwards, Majlis Amanah Rakyat (Mara) will reduce its sponsorship of medical students in educational institutions abroad.
Its chairman Tan Sri Annuar Musa said Mara would be more selective in its sponsorship to avoid a surplus of medical graduates in the country.
He said the number of medical students in local universities was increasing and sufficient to cater to the country’s needs.
“We have stopped sending students to a few institutions abroad or reduced the number due to safety issues and decline in quality of education offered,” he said at a university here today, in conjunction with the introduction of a twinning programme for Mara students.
Mara has sponsored about 2,000 students in the medical field, including hundreds in Indonesian universities. — Bernama
