KUALA LUMPUR, April 1 — Sarawak PAS may engage in three-cornered fights with former Pakatan Rakyat allies and rival Barisan Nasional in the state polls, a senior party leader said after the local chapter of DAP quit the pact over hudud.
Local daily New Straits Times reported today PAS vice-president Datuk Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man as saying that PAS is also considering contesting 10 seats in the state polls scheduled before the end of next year, up from the five seats contested previously.
“As of now, we are eyeing up to 10 seats in the Sarawak polls,” Tuan Ibrahim was quoted saying.
“Yes, more seats, considering what is taking place there now,” he added.
Sarawak DAP chairman Chong Chieng Jen reportedly said last Friday that his party can no longer work with PAS in the east Malaysian state in light of the Islamist party’s push for hudud law in Kelantan.
The decision would be detrimental to the chances for opposition parties to defeat BN as multi-cornered fights generally favour the incumbent in Malaysia’s first-past-the-post electoral system.
