SHAH ALAM, March 27 — The Straight Path Convention 2015 will be held this weekend to give Malaysians a better understanding of Islam.
Organised by Dakwah Corner Publications Sdn Bhd and Yayasan Ta’lim, the convention is expected to be attended by more than 3,000 people at the Shah Alam Convention Centre.
Four international speakers would be on the centre-stage including Mufti Ismail Musa Menk from Zimbabwe.
He said the convention would address topics such as the basics of Islam and modern-day challenges.
“The convention seeks to educate and remind the public of what Islam stands for. Many people have a misconception of Islam because of negative publicity and a lack of knowledge,” he told a press conference yesterday.
“We will address the issue to send message to attendees that there is a way to practise Islam without being extreme.”
Ismail said non-Muslims were also welcomed to attend the convention.
“It is not exclusively for Muslims as we hope to educate everyone regardless of their religion or background,” he said.
The convention would be held from 9.30am to 7pm.
Other speakers were Sheikh Dr Muhammad Salah, a well-known scholar in the US; Sheikh Saeed Rageah, a lecturer who travels the globe, and Sheikh Abdurraheem Green, who has been active in the field of dakwah (preaching) for about 30 years.
Muhammad Salah said the convention would be interactive.
“The audience can pose questions during the convention and we will try to guide them,” he said.
He said there is a need to educate public on separating culture and religion.
“It is important to know where to draw a line between culture and faith as some problems stemmed from culture instead of religion,” he said.
Muhammad Salah said human beings should learn to live peacefully despite having different religious backgrounds.
“We need to go back to the basics of Islam and try to understand how to coexist with everyone,” he said.
