KUALA LUMPUR, March 19 — DAP Socialist Youth today issued a moratorium on its collaboration with its PAS counterpart to protest the Islamist party’s push for hudud in Kelantan.
DAP Socialist Youth chief Teo Kok Seong then challenged Barisan Nasional Youth to follow suit with Umno, owing to the party’s support for Kelantan’s Shariah Criminal Code II (1993) Enactment today.
“The executive council of DAPSY has decided by consensus to suspend all forms of cooperation with PAS Youth at all state and federal levels.
“This decision was taken following PAS Kelantan’s tabling of the Shariah Criminal Code II (1993) Enactment recently that ignores the agreement within Pakatan Rakyat,” he said in a statement.
The DAP Socialist Youth’s move is an escalation of the open disagreement between DAP and PAS over the move to enforce the Islamic penal code in Kelantan.
DAP said it will review its position in Pakatan Rakyat after PAS tabled the amendments to the state’s hudud law yesterday, and reiterated this when the Bill was passed today with Umno’s support.
PAS proceeded with the changes to Kelantan’s hudud law, despite being told by the PR presidential council to revise the Bill and resubmit it for discussion.
The Kelantan state legislative assembly today voted through the amendments to the Shariah Criminal Code II 1993 to pave the way for the controversial implementation of hudud laws in the state.
