KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 27— Umno division chiefs will hold a solidarity meeting with Datuk Seri Najib Razak on March 8 to prove that the party president still commanded strong grassroots support.
According to a report by The Star Online, the meeting will also consist of a dialogue between the Umno division heads and the Prime Minister.
“We want to show the world that Najib has strong grassroots support and these people should stop messing with the Barisan Nasional leader,” Cheras division chief Datuk Seri Syed Ali Alhabshee was quoted saying.
The Umno leader said that politically motivated local rivals and foreign meddlers were playing “perception games” to belittle a democratically elected government and destabilise the country.
“We will not tolerate such spy wars. We have to nip the problem in the bud. We have seen it happen elsewhere, and we will not sit still and watch those with a sinister agenda play their nasty games here,” Syed Ali added, saying that the idea for the meeting was proposed by a group of division chiefs.
“So far, about 170 out of the 191 Umno division chiefs have confirmed attendance.
“We want to show that we are firmly behind the Prime Minister and that Umno is not divided as suggested by some people,” he added.
Kepong Umno chief Datuk Rizuan Abdul Hamid told The Star the meeting would counter claims that the party was politically divided.
Kinabatangan division chief Datuk Bung Moktar Radin said the meeting would allow Umno leader to ask Najib some issues such matters pertaining to the economy and 1MDB (1Malaysia Development Berhad).
Bung denied that the gathering was to counter an internal party threat against Najib.
