DENGKIL, Feb 10 — Supporters of Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim have been urged to abide by the law if they wish to hold a rally or face stern action by the police.
Deputy Inspector General of Police, Datuk Seri Noor Rashid Ibrahim, said police are monitoring the situation and ready for any eventuality following the court's decision to uphold the jail sentence on Anwar for sodomy.
"Some people may want to hold a rally to put their view across but they must keep within the law or the police will take action against them," he told reporters after launching Op Selamat 6/2015 in conjunction with the Chinese New Year at Dengkil Rest and Recreation Area (South), here today.
Anwar, 67, failed in his final appeal today after the Federal Court found him guilty for sodomising his former aide Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan,29.
He allegedly committed the offence in Unit 11-5-1 Kondominium Desa Damansara, Jalan Setiakasih, Bukit Damansara, between 3.10pm and 4.30pm on June 26, 2008.
Chief Justice Tun Arifin Zakaria, who led the five-member panel of judges, upheld the conviction and five years jail sentence imposed by the Court of Appeal.
Commenting on the situation at the Palace of Justice in Putrajaya this morning, Noor Rashid said there was some commotion involving supporters of both sides but the situation was under control. — Bernama
